Not Your Ordinary Grandparents
Every five years, Japan’s ministry of Internal affairs and Communications conducts a census to find out the age, gender, nationalities and employment conditions of the population of the country. Any statistical study is essential for the government to base every year’s framework on it and in Japan’s case; it is a piece of information that is strategically used to desperately save what is considered a ticking time bomb demography.
From 1945 to 1980 (post war era), the population of Japan was filled with the younger generation although the 2005 census alarms the locals by stating that there is only 0.7% increase of the total population in a span of 5 years. Ever since World War II the population hasn’t dropped drastically up until in the year 2004-2005 because the population fell by 20,0000.

The Japanese Elderly Stronger Than Ever
This year’s census is said to just confirm the scary truth that Japan’s population demography is now completely upside down. Some might say; why is this bad? In typical political and economic fashion, this is considered an issue that should be looked at carefully under a microscope, economist believe that this is a serious potential threat to a country’s economic growth. This means that more of the population will need more health care provided to them considered that most of the population is over the age of retirement and that the country will be lacking manpower to sustain its booming economy. Apparently, this is now more evident with the country’s increase in employment of overseas workers rather than local skilled workers.
Since population is the most basic variable of social and economic activity, demographic aging and population loss of this magnitude are sure to have profound ramifications at many levels.
The Asian Women’s Fund could be of service to this community by simply supporting their cause that is to live a healthier lifestyle as we age and do not let go of our youth. By working hand in hand with another organization there would be more opportunities for the people to consider and benefit from.
